【歌詞対訳】”Summertime Blues” / Eddie Cochran
エディ・コクラン（1938-60）の代表曲の一つ（1958年発表）。ブルーズ（blues：憂鬱）はもともとアメリカの黒人奴隷たちが日々の暮らしに対する嘆きを表現する音楽ジャンルだったが、そこに躍動的なリズムが加わることでR&Bになり、ロックンロールが成立する基盤となった。そのうちブルーズという言葉じたいも黒人の手を離れて、この曲のように白人の若者たちの不満を表すのに用いられるようになっていった。僕が愛聴する作品の一つにPJハーヴェイの『レット・イングランド・シェイク』（Let England Shake, 2011）があるが、その中に収録されている「ザ・ワーズ・ザット・メイクス・マーダー」(“The Words that Maketh Murder"）のアウトロはこんなフレーズの繰り返しで終わる。「私の問題を国連に持ち込んだらどうなるだろう？」（"What if I take my trouble to the United Nation?"）長年、この印象的なフレーズが頭に引っかかっていて、のちにコクランのこの曲を知って謎が解決した。ちなみに、RCサクセションの曲に「サマータイム・ブルース」があるが、これは原曲の歌詞を反原発のメッセージに置き換えて日本語でカバーしたもの。
