【歌詞対訳】”Dreaming” / The National

10枚目のアルバム『ラフ・トラック』（Laugh Track, 2023）に収録。個人的な感覚だと、アート志向の強いミュージシャンが"dream"という語を好んで曲名にしたがる傾向があるような気がする。たとえばケイト・ブッシュの「ザ・ドリーミング」（"The Dreaming"）、デヴィッド・シルヴィアンの「ダーケスト・ドリーミング」（”Darkest Dreaming"（暗黒の夢想））、レディオヘッドの「デイドリーミング」（"Daydreaming"（白昼夢））など。ザ・スミスにいたっては過去形の「ラスト・ナイト・アイ・ドレムト・ザット・サムバディ・ラヴド・ミー」（"Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me"（昨夜、誰かに愛される夢をみた））である。

かように"dream"はイギリスのインディー系ミュージシャンたちと相性がいいが、この顔ぶれにアメリカのザ・ナショナルを加えてもそんなに違和感がない。"You can stop dreaming, I’ll dream for you"というサビの興味深いところは、「君」も「僕」も決して夢の外に出ていかないということだ。終わりなどなく、ただ夢だけが残る。そうすると夢がすなわち現実と同義になる。詩ではなく散文になるが、このあたりの感覚はカフカや村上春樹に相通じるものがあるだろう。
